10 Road Rules For Travel and Life
So your about to take off on the road and really don't know what to expect. You know your about to change but don't know how. You know things are about to happen but don't yet have the to foresight to respond. That's the beauty of the journey. This space of the unknown is where growth, change and magic happen. Let life work its course, but remember to always keep these road rules stored in the back of your mind.
1. NEVER LEAVE YOUR WINGMAN
This falls into the same category of always remember everything Topgun ever taught you about life. Maverick didn't do it and neither should you. You two are a team, the Maverick to the Goose. One thing Maverick never did was leave his Goose - no matter what kind of lovin' feelin'.
2. LISTEN TO YOUR FRIENDS
(Assuming you have good friends) They know you not better than your mother but different than your mother. Their input is probably always in your best interest.
3. BE PATIENT
Know going into this that travel requires patience. Lots of time spent waiting and generally not moving as quickly and conveniently as your used to. Hence why you should always have a book and a notebook. The wait suddenly becomes much more enjoyable.
4. BE OPEN
Seriously, open up. The most amazing things that happen to you will happen as a result of you being open. Be overly optimistic but stay unwaveringly true to your instinct. Most people are good people in this world. They have a lot to share and a lot to teach so long as your curious. It all begins with one conversation.
5. SAY YES
This goes along with being open. If your one of those people who say no just for the sake of it, it's time you become a yes girl. (or boy.) Good things will happen.
6. LAUGH WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
You will be crammed in sleeping buses, amongst bugs of every sort, stepping on coral, in the oddest smells, peeing while things below you are moving. Weird things are about to happen. It's inevitable. The moment you learn to laugh in these situations is the moment it all becomes a whole lot better.
7. TRY EVERYTHING
I say this with discretion, with fetus egg, fish guts, domestic animals, ancient elixirs and magical potion drugs aside. For everything else - try everything. There is a moment when you consider doing something on the road, and then there are the million memories you forever have with you for doing it. These memories are gold.
8. TRUST YOUR GUT
Your instinct tells you so much, especially on the road. You HAVE to always, trust your gut. If something is telling you the situation is bad, pull a Velma and Louise and get the hell out.
9. BE GRACIOUS
You will be amazed at the amount people who want to open their homes to you, cook for you, generally help you. (Like I said - most people are good.) It's an amazing experience when people share their world like this with you. Listen, smile, be kind, be overly grateful and always pay it forward.
10. WHEREVER YOU GO, GO WITH ALL YOUR HEART
I leave you with this, because it couldn't be more true. Your in this game because you chose to be (and for damn good reason.) Every time you make a choice, you change your future. So whatever you do, whatever decision you make, know why you made it and believe in it. Then, go with all your heart.
& as always, enjoy the ride.
